The Southern Mansion is located in the heart of Cape May's historic district on two acres of park-like grounds. The entire property is surrounded by a 150 year-old hedgerow creating a foliage barrier between the hustle and bustle outside and the relaxed atmosphere within.Our central location provides enjoyable, short walks to the beach, the shops and the restaurants, all within a few blocks. In her youth, Cape May was known as "Up North, Down South" for her status as a favorite destination for antebellum southern gentry. During this period, Cape May imitated the architectural and social trends of southern cities of the mid-1800s. In 1879 a great fire swept through Cape May, taking with it many of the grand structures built during this era of southern influence. Fortunately, one mansion survived the fire, as well as ensuing years of neglect, and today it has received a complete restoration. After a century - long absence, genuine southern hospitality and antebellum style have returned to the island of "Olde Cape May." The original Southern Mansion and her splendid grounds, heirloom furnishings, artwork and new accommodations await you.

| Directions To The Southern Mansion The Garden State Parkway becomes Lafayette St. after crossing the bridge onto Cape May island. Continue to first traffic light and make a left-hand turn onto Madison. Turn right at next street onto Washington and proceed two blocks. The Southern Mansion is on the left, on the corner of Jefferson and Washington Streets. |
