The Historic Cold Spring Village 1996-97 educational program has been revised to provide an improved "Visits To and From the Past" experience. Our continuing effort to present life in an 1800's rural village has evolved into four distinct programs,
In addition to the school programs, three editions (Fail, Winter and Spring) of The Chronicle newspaper are distributed to all County 4th grade classes. The entire
educational program is offered at no charge to Cape May County residents through the
generosity of PNC Bank, Gazette-Leader Publication, Crest Savings Bank, The Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village and HCSV Foundation.
Schoolhouse Experience
"Visits To the Past" are available from November 1, 1996 to March 1, 1997. Reservations must be made in advance and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact the Village Educational Office at (609) 898-2300, ext. 16.
Due to increasing costs and the availability of interpreters, the number of "Visits" may be limited. It is recommended that teachers make every effort to combine classes for the presentations. The program will cover three 45 minute segments. Each one will provide a sampler of everyday life in the l9th century, focusing on the trades, crafts, issues and lifestyles of country folk.
The three choices are as follows:
The Marshallville One Room Schoolhouse is available for class visits from November 1, 1996 through May 1, 1997. Teachers who wish to teach a class in the style of a 19th century schoolmarm or master may reserve the building in advance. Costumes and resource materials are available through the Village Educational Office. The school has a seating capacity for between 18 to 22 students.
The Junior Apprentice Program takes place during July and August. Open to children ages 12-13, the program consists of two five week sessions. The twelve students who are accepted into the program, six per session, must formally apply for admission and be in good standing academically. Students are introduced to a variety of trades and crafts including a possible concentration in a trade or craft of their choice. The application process includes a written essay, two recommendations including one from a current teacher, and a personal interview. Due to the popularity of the program, children who have previously participated may not reapply.
