Historic Cold Spring Village

A 19th Century Rural Farm Village

Schools in! The Historic Cold Spring Village 1996-97 educational program has been revised to provide an improved "Visits To and From the Past" experience. Our continuing effort to present life in an 1800's rural village has evolved into four distinct programs,

In addition to the school programs, three editions (Fail, Winter and Spring) of The Chronicle newspaper are distributed to all County 4th grade classes. The entire educational program is offered at no charge to Cape May County residents through the generosity of PNC Bank, Gazette-Leader Publication, Crest Savings Bank, The Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village and HCSV Foundation.

"Visits To the Past" are available from November 1, 1996 to March 1, 1997. Reservations must be made in advance and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact the Village Educational Office at (609) 898-2300, ext. 16.

Due to increasing costs and the availability of interpreters, the number of "Visits" may be limited. It is recommended that teachers make every effort to combine classes for the presentations. The program will cover three 45 minute segments. Each one will provide a sampler of everyday life in the l9th century, focusing on the trades, crafts, issues and lifestyles of country folk.

The three choices are as follows:

  1. A Father's Day in the 1800's. Deals with the following crafts: woodworking tinsmithing broommaking and printing. Tools, illustrations and examples of work will be brought into the classroom. Demonstrations on any or ail of these crafts will be incorporated into the overall presentation. The "father" will discuss his contribution to the home and society.
  2. A Mother's Day in the 1800's. Deals with the following crafts: domestic arts, spinning, weaving and basket making. Illustrations and examples of work will be brought into the classroom. Demonstrations on any or all of the crafts will be brought into the presentation. The "mother" will discuss her contribution to the home and society.
  3. A Child's School Day in the 1800's. The Village Schoolmaster will create the proper environment for l9th century learning (and fun) by organizing and conducting class in the style typical of the period, including the games that were played during recess.
"Visits To the Past" will commence on May 26, 1997. Two sessions are available each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday through June 13, 1997. The first session is scheduled from 9:30 until 11:30 am and the second session from 12 noon until 2 pm. Each session will accommodate approximately 100 students. Six Village crafts buildings will be available for visitation on a rotating basis: pottery, (domestic arts including spinning, weaving, basketry, broommaking and blacksmithing.) Reservations must be made in advance by calling (609) 898-2300, ext. 16. Please note that each school librarian will be provided with resource material in the form of pre and post "Visits" packet. The information may be copied for distribution to students.

The Marshallville One Room Schoolhouse is available for class visits from November 1, 1996 through May 1, 1997. Teachers who wish to teach a class in the style of a 19th century schoolmarm or master may reserve the building in advance. Costumes and resource materials are available through the Village Educational Office. The school has a seating capacity for between 18 to 22 students.

The Junior Apprentice Program takes place during July and August. Open to children ages 12-13, the program consists of two five week sessions. The twelve students who are accepted into the program, six per session, must formally apply for admission and be in good standing academically. Students are introduced to a variety of trades and crafts including a possible concentration in a trade or craft of their choice. The application process includes a written essay, two recommendations including one from a current teacher, and a personal interview. Due to the popularity of the program, children who have previously participated may not reapply.

Please contact the Village Educational Office to receive an application packet at (609) 898-2300, ext. 16.
