Sandy Hook, part of The Gateway National Recreation Area includes six miles of ocean beaches, salt marshes, the waters of Sandy Hook Bay and the historic sites of Fort Hancock. Although there are no beach fees, unless you are on a bicycle or walking, you will have to pay the parking fees. The Hook is notorious for filling up comletely by 9am on a Hot Summer weekend though so be prepared to begin your walking journey in the wee hours should you decide to try.
From the tip of the Sandy Hook peninsula there is a spectacular view of the entrance to New York Harbor and Hiking, fishing, birding and beach combing are popular throughout the year. All beaches in both the south and northern parts of the Hook are protected and for the adventurous among us, there is a clothing optional section at South Gunnison beach.
There are picnic areas near Fort Hancock in Guardian Park and on the sand in North Beach. No open fires are allowed anywhere in the park. Aside from it's six beaches, The Hook offers an abundance of historical lore with, an historic military base, nature trails, captivating views of New York City and a wide variety of cultural and wildlife programming.
There are rest rooms and concession stands located on each beach section and a nice restaurant, The Sea Gull's Nest is located near Area D. The Area is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
